Review: Logitech mm50 iPod Speakers

The Logitech mm50 is a wonderful portable/transportable speaker for the iPod. It is a well-designed, well-thought-out package with very good sound quality for its size. The mm50 feels solid and has a nice, classy iPod-matching look. iPods fit into the dock in the middle of the mm50.

Portability

Portable speakers come in a variety of sizes. The mm50 is about in the middle of the range of portable speakers, 12.75"x3.75"x1.4", not too, small, not too large. Logitech designed the mm50 with a built-in battery that lasts about 10 hours. The battery automatically recharges when the speakers are plugged in. One tradeoff though, is that the battery is built into the speakers and not designed to be easily removed, so, if you need to use it for more than 10 hours without AC power, you're out of luck.

Sound Quality

The Logitech mm50 has very good sound quality, surprisingly good for its size. You aren't going to get heart-thumping bass from these speakers, but, they sound good, and get loud enough to fill a good-sized (15'x15') room. If you listen very closely to it (ears next to the speaker) in silent sections of music, you can hear a bairly audible hiss but from normal distances it's not too noticeable. The 3D Stereo sound mode sounds good for certain types of music. Overall, I'm very pleased with how they sound.

Controls

The mm50 has four buttons on top, an on/off button, a "3D Surround" button, and a UP volume and DOWN volume button. The buttons are "chicklet" style buttons that work ok, though don't provide as nice a tactile feel as other styles of buttons. The remote control is an infrared remote, which means it needs to have an unobstructed line-of-sight view of the front of the speakers. The buttons are also "chicklet" style, and, I don't think they have a very good tactile feel either, but they work ok. The remote is very compact and simple. One minor annoyance is there isn't anyplace to stow the remote on the speaker.

Extras

The mm50 comes with a nice carrying case that fits the speaker perfectly, and has a spot for tucking in the remote. Logitech also built in a docking port connector in the back that lets you connect the speakers to your computer so your iPod can sync with your computer- a really nice touch! They also have an audio input jack so you can connect other non-iPod devices to the speakers. They definitely did a great job with these useful design decisions.

Conclusion

The Logitech mm50 portable iPod speaker is a nicely designed, well-thought-out product. For those that want good sounding speakers with portability, these are definitely worth considering. I am very happy with this purchase.
